This app is intended to improve color perception for individuals with colorblindness by adjusting the screen colors. It uses my patented methodology of measuring red and green of each pixel and using the difference between them to increase color contrast and saturation at that point. This approach differs from other methods of aiding the colorblind such as programs that change difficult-to-perceive colors into completely different colors or by trying to predict how much a colorblind person differs from someone with normal color vision. It is able to increase color intensity, as opposed to glasses which can only decrease color intensity by using filters.
The enhanced image will appear too vivid to those with normal color vision, but my hope is that this enhanced image, when seen through the eyes of the colorblind, will be more like what a person with normal color vision sees when looking at the unenhanced image. The amount of benefit for each colorblind individual depends on the particular genetics of that individual. I am interested to learn how much improvement is seen by each person, if any at all, so please let me know.
Normal color perception requires 3 different kinds of retinal cones, each containing a photosensitive protein, distinguished by its response to frequencies of light. The most common forms of color blindness occur when one of these proteins is defective. The defective cone has a frequency response that is too similar to one of the normal cones, which usually leads to reduced contrast in the red-green dimension. This app directly increases the red-green contrast. The algorithm is thus based on how the eye processes color, rather than on the physics of the optical input. The app has 2 interface screens, one for displaying the live camera image, and the other for displaying a stored photograph or video. One can move from the live view screen to the stored media screen by pressing the Shutter button to save the live image (actually saves 2 images - one in original color and one color-enhanced) or by pressing the Gallery button to select an image from the gallery. From the stored image screen, one can return to the live view screen by pressing the Gallery button.
There are 2 sliders that control the color adjustment. The bottom slider controls the amount of adjustment, with zero adjustment (therefore showing the unenhanced image) at far left, and maximum adjustment on the far right. It will make the reds redder, and the greens greener. The top slider allows the user to select whether red or green gets greater enhancement. There is more enhancement of red when the slider is to the left, and more enhancement of green when the slider is to the right.
The pulse function is useful for comparing the unenhanced image to the enhanced image. To stop the pulsing, press the pulse button again.
The yin/yang button is a playful way to alter the assignments of the red, green and blue channels. Press it again to return to normal color processing.
